NUUK, Greenland (PNN) - January 11, 2025 - Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede told President Donald J. Trump, “We are ready to talk. Greenland looks forward to discussing the possibilities for business cooperation and the development of Greenland’s mineral sector, including critical minerals and other relevant areas with the U.S.”
Speaking next to Danish PM Mette Frederiksen at a joint press conference, Egede emphasized the need for investment in resource development as well as diversified industries in order to reduce dependence on Danish subsidies. That said, Egede also said, “Greenland is for the Greenlanders. We don’t want to be Danes. We don’t want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.“
Meanwhile Prime Minister Frederiksen says she has also asked to speak with President Trump.
This is what happens when the United States has a real leader.
Based on Greenland’s Self-Government Act of 2009, Greenland has the right to self-determination, including the option of independence. This seems to mean that if Greenland holds a referendum and votes to leave Denmark, Denmark would be legally obligated to respect that decision. Denmark would have to ratify it in Parliament but this is mostly a formality. The U.S. would be able to develop the third largest oil reserves in the Arctic. This is like the Alaska and Norwegian oil reserves. If the U.S. got the Greenland tourism industry up to the level of Alaska this would add about $40,000 per person.
