NBC and CNN reported that the gunman was known to the Secret Service and had previously tried to gain access to the White House.

President Donald J. Trump is safe and no Secret Service agents were injured.

Approximately 20-30 gunshots were heard near the White House on Saturday evening shortly after President Trump announced he had “largely negotiated” a deal with Iran.

Pool reporters were told to run inside the press briefing room.

The shots were fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

ABC News White House Correspondent Selina Wang was in the middle of taping on her iPhone for a social media video when the shots were fired. She ducked down amid the gunfire.

“I heard about 30 shots,” DCNewsNow reporter Chris Flanagan said. “Secret Service rushed us into the press briefing room.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI is on the scene and responding to shots fired near White House grounds.

“We are aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” the Secret Service said.

Saturday’s gunfire near the White House comes just weeks after Secret Service agents exchanged gunfire with an armed man near the White House.

Last month, a gunman stormed the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton and opened fire while President Trump and his Cabinet were in the ballroom.
