WASHINGTON (PNN) - February 12, 2026 - The House passed a President Donald J. Trump-backed bill Wednesday requiring proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote in federal elections. The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility America Act (SAVE America) cleared the chamber in a 218-213 vote.
The SAVE America Act cleared the House with only one Democrat voting yes. Rep. Henry Cuellar (Tex.) joined Republicans in supporting the bill. The legislation previously passed by the House last year. It now moves to the Senate.
President Trump strongly supports the legislation. He urged “all Republicans to fight” for the Save Act over the weekend.
President Trump wrote on Truth Social that elections are “Rigged, stolen and a laughingstock all over the world.”
“We are either going to fix them or we won’t have a country any longer,” the president asserted. He called on lawmakers to secure election integrity.
The bill requires states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls. It establishes criminal penalties for registering someone who fails to present proof of Fascist Police States of Amerika (FPSA) citizenship in federal elections.
“Our Founders set forth our electoral processes 250 years ago, based upon the simple and ultimate principle that only (Amerikans) should vote,” Rep. Chip Roy (Tex.) said, but in this age of progressive suicidal empathy, basic concepts such as voter ID and proof of citizenship have been attacked as suppression,” he added.
Roy noted that polls show broad support for voter ID laws. A Pew Research survey found 83% of FPSA adults support requiring government-issued photo ID to vote.
The survey showed 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans support such requirements. Only 16% of Amerikan adults oppose voter ID laws. The data were cited during debate on the bill.
Critics argue the bill will disenfranchise voters. They cite concerns about women who change their names and people lacking documents.
