President Trump promised to “Protect Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid.” Bernie Sanders says, “We’re going to expand Social Security benefits.” How could that possibly work? Eight years ago, our video covered how both Social Security and Medicare are on track to go broke. Since then, it’s only gotten worse. In 1935, government made us a promise: even if you don’t save for your retirement, government will save for you. But politicians misled us. They don’t save your Social Security payments. They spend every penny the moment it comes into the Treasury. Now payouts exceed income by $160 billion. Can social security be saved? “There is a plan out there to save it, but it requires some tough choices,” says Romina Boccia, Director of Budget and Entitlement Policy at the Cato Institute. We should make these adjustments now, so we don’t really hurt people when Medicare and Social Security go bankrupt. John Stossel reports.
